The 2023 presidential election is just a few days away, and President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to make sure it is free and fair.
In a meeting with Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, the secretary general of the World Customs Organization, who was in Nigeria for a conference on fragile borders on Thursday, President Buhari gave the promise.
He emphasized that he will make sure that the elections are held in a peaceful and conducive environment despite the customary excitement and gamesmanship that accompany campaigns.
The President went on to say that Nigeria and her neighbors must prioritize proper border control, highlighting how the precarious situation of many nations’ entrance points only serves to fuel terrorism, economic sabotage, and other criminal activity.
In the meantime, Dr. Mikuriya, the head of the WCO, has urged the Customs Services to focus on security rather than just generating revenue. This is his fourth visit to the country.
Without border protection, he observed, the country cannot successfully secure its revenues.
