The Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, have visited controversial Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Gumi in his official residence in Kaduna state, Bifotad Media reports.
Obi, a former Anambra State Governor made this known when he announced the meeting on his official Twitter handle.
While sharing photos of the visit, Obi wrote:
“Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed and I stopped by for a courtesy call on Sheikh Gumi at his official residence in Kaduna.”
Sheik Gumi has been a subject of controversy in the media space, especially with his involvement in the negotiation and release of bandits in the North East. He has also in the past made a case for the terrorists, in cases justifying their onslaught and berating the Federal Government’s offensive towards them.
He is seen by many on the social media space as a sacred cow that the Nigerian Government is afraid of arresting despite his sometimes inciting comments.
The visit of Obi and his running mate is seen by some analysts as a betrayal of what Obi stands for: A Clean slate that does not fraternize with presumed enemies of Nigeria.
It is unclear what the agenda of the meeting is for but some opined that it may not be unconnected with Obi’s Presidential ambition.
Peter Obi has over the last few months been enjoying solidarity among the populace, especially the young population with his avowed frugality being premised as the reason for the sporadic hike in popularity.
He is also seen by the youths as an alternative to the two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Nigerian Presidential election is slated for February 2023.
